Do you ever listen to a song and think that it would make a great book? I do.
Songs can be inspirational! There are songs written about books, and it only makes sense that books could be written about or at least be inspired by songs. I know there probably are books inspired by songs, but googling isn’t much help. I am also almost certain that fanfiction writers pull plots from songs all the time (Don’t ask how I know this, the answer isn’t pretty). I’m not sure if anyone has blogged about this before and I tried googling but I’m sure my terms could have been better.
Anyway, here are two fake book premises based on songs.
“Soco Amaretto Lime” by Brand New

There are actually so many Brand New songs that would make great books (maybe I’ll do more of them later), but this one would be really cool for a guys hanging out, partying, and romantic angst.
So here’s the situation:

(I’m naming the MC Jesse after the lead singer of Brand New)
Jesse is 18, and it’s the summer after high school. He hangs out and drinks with his group of guys (which includes Pete, who he passes the bottle back to, obviously). They like chilling on an overpass (danger is fun). “Passed out on the overpass “ They feel like they own the town and they feel young and powerful. “And tonight will go on forever while we
walk around this town like we own the streets ”
I’m gonna stay eighteen forever (cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever (sun poisoned)
And we’ll never miss a party (this offer…)

And we’ll never have to listen (new haircut)
to anyone about anything (new bracelet)
cause it’s all been done and it’s all been said (eyeliner)
we’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get
I can’t really think of any books that are just about a group of friends chilling and getting into trouble, wanting to get out of town “(get) the hell out of this town find some conversation.” These things are very representative of being a teenager in my experience (which, admittedly, was a while ago) there wasn’t always something huge and defining happening, and a chill book about just life.
Add in the drama of young love you’re just jealous cause I’m young and in love and first kisses with some injuries new stitches, (I mean, they hang out on overpasses and parkways, who’d have thunk?) arguments ending with photos being torn up and you’re tearin up your photos cause you wanna forget… it’s over, and it would be interesting! Maybe there could even be a sequel where the girl from the break up goes to England to study abroad and the boy is bitter? There are so many possibilities!
“My Happy Ending” by Avril Lavigne

A lot of Avril songs (okay just a lot of songs in general) could inspire books too. This one would be a break up song.
Here’s the situation:

Girl (teen? adult? it could work either way) gets dumped. She wants an explanation, because who doesn’t want to know why they’re being dumped? Let’s talk this over It’s not like we’re dead Was it something I did? Was it something You said? She thought they were happy. You were all the things I thought I knew And I thought we could be.
There’s drama with his group of friends who say she isn’t worth his time. You’ve got your dumb friends I know what they say They tell you I’m difficult But so are they They don’t know what goes on between the couple, and they don’t know everything about him. But they don’t know me Do they even know you? All the things you hide from me All the shit that you do
He pretended to love her but cheated on her. Thanks for acting like you cared And making me feel like I was the only one Did he not even dump her? Did she catch him with someone else? What happened?? Thanks for watching as I fall And letting me know we were done

We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it

She thought they had an epic love (as one is wont to think). He was everything. They were meant to be. They were supposed to be. But now all the memories fade away. In the song, she doesn’t really mention moving on with her life, but in the book she would definitely develop and understand that she’s better off without that douchebag and she’s fully capable of being happy alone. Because people can be happy alone. So see, she really does get a HAPPY ENDING. Which is the title of the song. Awesome?
