Besides Books (but not really, there are books)

I’m still really busy with school, and not doing a fantastic job keeping up with blogging (oops). I am slaying at my 8 week course though, so that’s good. I am hoping to catch up on commenting soon! I try to keep up with the top few sections of my bloglovin’ list every so often but then I get distracted or face internet problems and don’t make it as far as I’d like. I will find a way to defeat the list, somehow! And I will probably do a recappish post tomorrow, but I kind of forgot about the whole 28 days thing because that’s what an intense short class will do to you, and I had this one almost ready!

book sets

I mentioned in this post that I got my niecelets some books for Christmas.Neither of the sets had actually been opened and I was actually pretty sad about it, but the oldest niece decided to read Ivy and Bean (Though, because they are Ivy + Bean, she insists on saying “Ivy Plus Bean”) the other day and finished one of them pretty quickly and really liked it! It made me feel really happy! She asked if we could read one of the other ones together sometime this week and I’m super excited about it! I’ve also been reading Dora and 5 minute Princess stories with the youngest niece. I haven’t done a whole lot of reading one on one with the middle one, but I do watch her dance a lot =)

I am behind on every TV show I watch.  And there are so many I want to start! I am hoping once my short class ends I can start catching up. I am incredibly excited about the new season of Game of Thrones! The character posters are kind of lame, but aren’t they always? I’m excited about so many things, but the wedding (Marg’s hair is ridiculous and I love it so much) and Oberyn and everything in the North and Arya and Saaaaansa are some highlights. And dragons, of course. I’m just excited. Do you watch? Are you excited? What are you most excited about?

And speaking of GOT, I saw Kit Harington in Pompeii last night. The movie isn’t exactly great but I enjoyed it, and more importantly, KIT. He is ridiculously good looking. He should be in all the things ever.

This MS MR cover of “Do I Wanna Know” by Arctic Monkeys is one of my favorite things at the moment:

Tell me some of your favorite things?

Fake Book Premises Inspired by Songs

Do you ever listen to a song and think that it would make a great book? I do.

Songs can be inspirational! There are songs written about books, and it only makes sense that books could be written about or at least be inspired by songs. I know there probably are books inspired by songs, but googling isn’t much help. I am also almost certain that fanfiction writers pull plots from songs all the time (Don’t ask how I know this, the answer isn’t pretty). I’m not sure if anyone has blogged about this before and I tried googling but I’m sure my terms could have been better.

Anyway, here are two fake book premises based on songs.

“Soco Amaretto Lime” by Brand New
lyrics

There are actually so many Brand New songs that would make great books (maybe I’ll do more of them later), but this one would be really cool for a guys hanging out, partying, and romantic angst.

So here’s the situation:
lyrics are in green

(I’m naming the MC Jesse after the lead singer of Brand New)

Jesse is 18, and it’s the summer after high school. He hangs out and drinks with his group of guys (which includes Pete, who he passes the bottle back to, obviously). They like chilling on an overpass (danger is fun). “Passed out on the overpass “ They feel like they own the town and they feel young and powerful. “And tonight will go on forever while we
walk around this town like we own the streets ”

I’m gonna stay eighteen forever (cut me open)
So we can stay like this forever (sun poisoned)
And we’ll never miss a party (this offer…)
cause we keep them going constantly (…stands forever)
And we’ll never have to listen (new haircut)
to anyone about anything (new bracelet)
cause it’s all been done and it’s all been said (eyeliner)
we’re the coolest kids and we take what we can get

I can’t really think of any books that are just about a group of friends chilling and getting into trouble, wanting to get out of town “(get) the hell out of this town find some conversation.” These things are very representative of being a teenager in my experience (which, admittedly, was a while ago) there wasn’t always something huge and defining happening, and a chill book about just life.

Add in the drama of young love you’re just jealous cause I’m young and in love and first kisses with some injuries new stitches, (I mean, they hang out on overpasses and parkways, who’d have thunk?) arguments ending with photos being torn up and you’re tearin up your photos cause you wanna forget… it’s overand it would be interesting! Maybe there could even be a sequel where the girl from the break up goes to England to study abroad and the boy is bitter? There are so many possibilities!

“My Happy Ending” by Avril Lavigne
lyrics

A lot of Avril songs (okay just a lot of songs in general) could inspire books too. This one would be a break up song.

Here’s the situation:
lyrics are in purple

Girl (teen? adult? it could work either way) gets dumped. She wants an explanation, because who doesn’t want to know why they’re being dumped? Let’s talk this over It’s not like we’re dead Was it something I did? Was it something You said? She thought they were happy. You were all the things I thought I knew And I thought we could be.

There’s drama with his group of friends who say she isn’t worth his time. You’ve got your dumb friends I know what they say They tell you I’m difficult But so are they They don’t know what goes on between the couple, and they don’t know everything about him. But they don’t know me Do they even know you? All the things you hide from me All the shit that you do

He pretended to love her but cheated on her. Thanks for acting like you cared And making me feel like I was the only one Did he not even dump her? Did she catch him with someone else? What happened?? Thanks for watching as I fall And letting me know we were done

You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
And all of the memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending

She thought they had an epic love (as one is wont to think). He was everything. They were meant to be. They were supposed to be. But now all the memories fade away. In the song, she doesn’t really mention moving on with her life, but in the book she would definitely develop and understand that she’s better off without that douchebag and she’s fully capable of being happy alone. Because people can be happy alone. So see, she really does get a HAPPY ENDING. Which is the title of the song. Awesome?

This is mainly a just for fun post. Maybe I’ll do more at some point.  I’m not sure if anyone else will really care about it but if you read it, thanks!

Daughter

Website | YouTube | Soundcloud

I am wasted, losing time
I’m a foolish, fragile spine
I want all that is not mine
I want him but we’re not right”

I discovered Daughter through tumblr. The first song I saw and listened to was “Smother,” which you can check out above. I loved it and wanted more, so I went to Spotify. I fell in love with the sound and Elena’s voice. It quickly became music I could listen to over and over again. It’s also music that distracts me from other music. If I open up iTunes to listen to say, One Direction (I like catchy pop songs and I’m not ashamed) sometimes I’ll see Daughter and it becomes necessary for me to listen to them instead. They’re album If You Leave‘s first track, “Winter” begins with this perfect first line “Drifting apart like two sheets of ice” and it infiltrates my brain all the time.

“Cos’ this is torturous electricity
Between both of us and this is
Dangerous cos’ I want you so much
But I hate your guts
I hate you”

They’re gaining popularity now and I guess they’ve released “Youth” as a single which is actually my favorite song along with “Landfill.” I haven’t listened to the radio much lately and my local station isn’t exactly the best with new music, so I wasn’t aware. While looking for a video to share (before I figured out how to embed Spotify tracks), I found out they were on Letterman. Maybe they’re more popular than I thought, but every time I try to talk about them nobody knows who they are! If you love them, let’s be Daughter fan friends, okay? Or if you haven’t heard of them before but listen and like, let me know!

“Woken up like an animal
Teeth ready for sinking
My mind’s lost in bleak vision
I tried to escape but keep sinking”

Bomb Girls

IMDB | Website

From the site: Set in the 1940s, Bomb Girls tells the remarkable stories of the women who risked their lives in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied forces fighting on the European front. The series delves into the lives of these exceptional women from all walks of life – peers, friends and rivals – who find themselves thrust into new worlds and changed profoundly as they are liberated from their home and social restrictions.

I’ve only watched the first season because it’s all Netflix has at the moment. Candians can watch full episodes on the website but citizens of the USA are not allowed. This is extremely hurtful, but one must survive and hope that season two will be on Netflix soon. The website also has information about the time period including pictures of women in factories at the time, pictures of what women wore, and cool propaganda posters. Bomb Girls has a lot of strong female characters that are easy to like and dislike. Do you watch Bomb Girls? Let’s talk. Not about season two, though.

Copper

IMDB | Website

From THR found on IMDB: Set in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City in the 1860s, focusing on a rugged young Irish cop who is forced to navigate his unruly and dangerous immigrant neighborhood while interacting with the uptown Manhattan crowd and the black community.

BBCA’s “About” has some spoilers for the first season so I used this one instead. This show isn’t perfect, it has its issues. It’s TVMA so there are some sex scenes (Not as bad as HBO) and a lot of violence. However, It also has Tom Weston-Jones as Detective Kevin Corcoran and he is gorgeous and has an accent. It has some pretty spectacular accents, a lot of Irish. There’s also some great singing. There’s Sarah, a freed slave and wife of another freed slave and doctor, Matthew. Sarah is probably my favorite character along with Corcoran, which is funny because I didn’t like her that much in the beginning! Don’t you love characters that change your mind?

The site also has a lot of neat stuff like The Fashion of Copper where the costume designer talks about fashion choices and shows sketches.

And this happened:

ROBERT MOREHOUSE with adorable dog

Do you watch Copper? Let’s talk about it’s good/bad/weird parts and how pretty Corcoran and company are. I’m up to date on this one.

So that’s what I’ve got for now. If there’s anything you’re loving right now and want to talk about, feel free to let me know about it!

Sorry if this isn’t your cuppa, it might become a semi-regular thing but it won’t be weekly. It will probably just be whenever I want to share something non-bookish with people. Perhaps I’ll even come up with a better name for it.
