In this retelling with a twist, Matilda “Mattie” Lowe is the ugly stepsister. She lives in a wealthy California community and goes to an exclusive prep school. She lives with her world renowned artist father and her stepsister Ella. Ella is perfect, which is offensive to Mattie. She even has a list of grievances about her: guys like her, she’s really nice, she cleans all the time, she’s a cheerleader and oh, yeah she’s dating the boy Mattie “loves.”
Mattie has a huge crush on the popular Jake Kingston. She’s sort of invisible so she doesn’t think he’ll ever notice her. Plus, there’s a code between girls and he’s with Ella. When she starts running into Jake and he’s rude, she begins to rethink her crush. She decides to run for class president against him. Later, she finds out that Jake and Ella are basically in a non-relationship and Ella likes somebody else.

It’s easy to see that Mattie is wrong about Ella, but it’s nice to see her figure that out for herself. Ella is eager to be helpful and to be family. I like Mattie’s passion of drawing Manga. It was also nice that Mattie felt like an outcast but learned to stand up for herself, not only to classmates but to her mother, too. Plus, the romance is really cute once Jake stops being a jerk.
The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is fun. It made me smile. It wasn’t perfect and there were a few things that made me roll my eyes. But it was happy and had a happy ending that made me happy. It’s probably not for everyone, but if you’re looking for some fun, get it! It even ends in with a list of positive things!
